LogIn – Krefeld

The city of Krefeld has a population of around 230,000 and was once a renowned centre of velvet and silk processing prior to its structural transformation into a chemicals, mechanical engineering and metalworking centre. Logistics and trade are also important business sectors thanks to its location close to the river Rhein.

Many people are unaware that the city is also known for its buildings designed by famous Bauhaus architects. Mies van der Rohe designed residential and factory buildings for the silk industry here.

Two of these buildings were later converted into internationally renowned art galleries. In its heyday, up to 30 Bauhaus architects were designing and building here, which made Krefeld the No. 1 Bauhaus city of North Rhein-Westphalia.
